For anyone who knows a thing or two about the global showpiece that is Ironman, the attentions of the triathlon world deservedly turned to South Africa in 2011.
From as early as January, the 4th edition of the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa produced a race of extremes - extreme in terms of weather conditions; and extreme in terms of atmosphere and excitement. This was underlined by the participation of Ironman 70.3 world champion, Jodie Swallow who unsurprisingly rose to the top to take the honours in East London while 2011 Abu Dhabi International Triathlon winner, Frederik van Lierde surged to the top of the podium beating local favourite, James Cunnama.
These performances were completed in less than ideal conditions, with an exceptionally cold sea temperature, strong winds and constant rain. The Ironman 70.3 South Africa course is never easy and when the weather gods don’t come to the party, athletes are given a true test of their credentials.
In stark contrast, athletes at the 7th Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa in Port Elizabeth were greeted with near perfect conditions. This paved the way for epic turn of events that ensued. Raynard Tissink, engrossed in an almighty tussle with Marino Vanhoenacker and Andi Boecherer, came up trumps in a new record time no less.
Enter Chrissie Wellington. This triathlon superstar blitzed the competition and surged to victory, breaking her own Ironman world record in the process while accomplishing the small feat of running the fastest marathon – overall.
Those present at this year’s Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa and Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa were privy to rare displays of determination, skill as well as a healthy smattering of individual brilliance that one doesn’t often get to see in five years, let alone in the space of four months.
Looking forward to 2012 athletes and spectators alike can expect even more from an event that has become better and better each year. All of this will start in East London on 22 January 2012 with the 5th edition of the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa. Three months later will see the 8th edition of the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa take place in Port Elizabeth.
Forget the Mayan calendar; the only one to watch in 2012 will be the South African Ironman calendar kicking off with a bang on 22 January in East London before the world focuses its attention on Port Elizabeth with the 2012 Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa!
